Urban and suburban properties in the Lower Mainland present unique challenges for excavation work. Common foundation excavation projects include perimeter drain replacement (which requires exposing the building's foundation wall), underpinning excavation for foundation repair, basement or crawlspace access improvements, new foundation construction for additions, and retaining wall construction on sloped properties. Working adjacent to existing foundations demands careful technique to avoid undermining the structure. We use stepped excavation approaches, temporary shoring where required, and limit the length of exposed foundation wall at any time. For deep excavations (typically over 1.2 meters), we follow WorkSafeBC excavation safety requirements including proper sloping or shoring, barricading, and access/egress provisions. Retaining wall excavation is particularly common on the Lower Mainland's many sloped properties. Whether constructing gravity walls from natural stone, mechanically stabilized earth walls using geogrid reinforcement, or concrete block walls, proper excavation and base preparation are critical to wall performance and longevity. We work with structural engineers and landscape architects to ensure excavation depths, widths, and grades meet design specifications.

Proper site grading is the foundation of successful landscaping and hardscaping projects. Water must flow away from building foundations, walkways must drain without ponding, patios and decks must have appropriate slope for drainage, and lawn areas must be graded to prevent low spots where water accumulates. Our mini excavators equipped with grading buckets and laser leveling systems achieve precise grades that ensure long-term drainage performance. For new landscape installations, site preparation typically includes removal of existing vegetation and debris, rough grading to establish drainage patterns, topsoil placement at appropriate depths for the planned vegetation, and fine grading to achieve smooth, consistent surfaces ready for sod, seed, or planting. For hardscape projects — patios, walkways, driveways — excavation includes removing existing surfaces, excavating to the required depth for base material and surface treatment, compacting the subgrade, and placing and compacting base gravel to engineered specifications.
